Leathercraft has defined Coach for decades – 85 years, to be exact. Like many specialized skills, the future of the craft depends on engaging with the next generation of artisans and designers. As the Coach Foundation learned, however, what students needed most to pursue a career in leathercraft were funding and opportunities for hands-on skill building. So they teamed up with the Fashion Scholarship Fund (FSF) for a solution.
Introducing the Dream It Real x FSF Leathercraft Scholarship Program.
Created by the Coach Foundation and FSF, the program is a new pathway to preserve the art and heritage of leathercraft by investing in the next generation of talent looking to pursue a career in the trade. Designed for students studying disciplines ranging from fashion design and product development to merchandising and business, the program combines financial support with direct access to Coach’s leathercraft experts, designers, and workshops.
Five students were selected for the inaugural cohort based on their passion for leathercraft and standout projects that specifically focused on repairing or upcycling leather goods. This summer, they traveled to New York and New Jersey for a two-day leathercraft immersion in our workshops, receiving a behind-the-scenes look at how craftsmanship comes to life across Coach.
“Receiving the Coach Dream It Real Scholarship is a powerful confirmation for me. This journey has affirmed that my genuine passion for craftsmanship, design, and emotional storytelling is not only real, but purposeful. It gives me confidence that I am on the right path — one that will allow me to create meaningful work and make a substantial impact in the industry.” — Joseph Coleman, Morehouse College
At the Coach (Re)Loved workshop, students learned first-hand foundational techniques including leather grading, stitching, repair, hardware installation and finishing. They also used pre-loved materials to repair and redesign bags.
“The small teams responsible for developing samples and upcycling pre-loved bags bring an incredible depth of knowledge and care to every piece they create. Witnessing the thought, precision, and collaboration behind their work gave me an even greater appreciation for the brand.” — Elise Warnke, Savannah College of Art and Design
The also group connected with leaders across Tapestry and Coach, who hosted portfolio reviews, panel discussions and career conversations to help students translate their interest in leather into fulfilling careers.
“The hands-on activities, like refurbishing a handbag, inspired me creatively. Meeting the Coach team and receiving their feedback has been great.” — Claire Galli, Marist University
As leathercraft continues to play a central role in Coach’s heritage and future, programs like this help ensure the knowledge, techniques and creativity of the trade continue to thrive with a new generation of talent.
